A LIFE WELL LIVED
Dr. William E. Cox
My business partner and I first met Dr. Cox in 2003. We were raising capital to open a local community bank. We spent about an hour discussing our plans and the need for a new bank to serve the business community. Afterward he said, “count me in fella’s.”
It is hard to describe the enthusiasm you have after meeting with a successful entrepreneur and business leader; realizing that he just agreed to invest in our vision.
Soon after, Dr. Cox joined the board of directors. He also brought his favorite banker – for us to hire. The man who today is the President of our bank.
Now, in the boardroom, some directors like to hear their own voice, not Dr. Cox, he was a voracious listener.
When Bill spoke, we listened. He was thoughtful and concise, and he was a gifted collaborator. He brought us together.

Dr. Cox retired from the board in 2018. Since that time, his picture hangs just outside the boardroom door. It is the last picture we see before entering the room.
That was with purpose, because for all of us who knew him, his picture inspires collaboration. And reminds us to truly listen to what others have to say.
Dr. Cox was an elegant leader. He loved coming to “his bank,” and we all loved seeing him. Most important – he was a true friend, and he will be missed.
