MAINSTREET BANK

What To Do if You’re a Victim

If you feel that you have fallen victim to Identity Theft it is important to act quickly to minimize loss. We encourage you to follow these steps:

  • Call the company or companies where you know fraud occurred.
  • Place fraud alerts with the credit bureaus and get a copy of your credit report.
  • Report the identity theft to the Federal Trade Commission.
  • File a report with your local police department.
  • Once you have identified all areas of fraud, close out all new accounts opened in your name.
  • Remove fraudulent charges from your account.
  • Correct your credit report.
  • Extend your fraud alert or freeze your credit so no additional accounts can be opened.

If you or someone you know is the victim of an Internet Scam, you can file a complaint with the FBI. A report should also be filed with your local police department. Complaints should include:

  • The victim’s name, address, telephone, and email.
  • Financial transaction information (account info, transaction date and time, who received the money).
  • Subject’s name, address, telephone, email, website, and IP address.
  • Specific details on how you were victimized.
  • Email header(s)
  • Any other relevant information you believe is necessary to support your complaint.
