Splash! Kids jump in the pool and shriek with laughter. It’s a hot June morning in Herndon, Virginia, and the Four Seasons Swim Team is getting a special visitor. MainStreet Bank’s Kamaljit Brar, Director of Merchant Services, SVP, is here to give the team a $1,000 donation.

“Isn’t that the biggest check you’ve ever seen?” April Marsh, the board president asks the swimmers. “Who does it say it’s to?”

“Four Seasons Swim Team!” the children shout.

For three months every summer children from different communities are brought together at this local swimming pool to improve their skills and practice for swim meets. Anyone between the ages of five and 18 who can swim the length of the pool unaided can join, and this year the team has around 80 children.

“We try to really promote community and family togetherness,” April said. They host events like pizza parties to bring the kids together and they stress the values of teamwork, participation, and good sportsmanship.

When Kamaljit heard the team was in need of donations, she immediately knew she wanted to help. She was excited to support children strengthening their swimming skills and to give back to the community in Herndon, where MainStreet Bank was founded.

But it was the look on the children’s faces that told her she had made the right choice.

“Just look at the kids! They look so happy,” she said. “I’ve made donations before, but this was just… wow! It was so worth it. Such a good feeling.”

The kids take a break from swimming and gather around to see the big check. They chatter excitedly about the donation and ask April and Jessie Ingham, the volunteer coordinator, what the team will use the money for.

“We use it for things like T-shirts, we use it for pizza parties, we use it for donuts, we use it for concessions, we use it to pay our coaches. Did you know we pay our coaches?”

The group of swimmers carry the check over their heads like they’re portaging a canoe. Then they all squeeze in for a group photo, smiling and making silly faces.

“I feel so touched today,” Kamaljit said. “We are truly blessed to be able to do this. $1,000 is a lot of money. To have such a substantial amount to give someone that could make such a big change – we’re so lucky that our company gives us that opportunity.”
